How the California Gold Rush of 1849 began, and what life was really like for the miners

The restaurant is on the 
second floor of a large, plantation-style building (fitting for a plantation-influenced menu). The open floor plan feels spacious, even as we meander past many tables to our seats. The restaurant is buzzing with people, servers walk by us briskly, and large, picture windows let in a nice breeze. The lively, yet intimate, ambiance is one every restaurant hopes to achieve. The dark-wood interior alongside its modern furniture makes the restaurant feel casual and elegant.

Remarkable dishes from long-running LA restaurants, including the Armenian kebabs from Mini Kabob and the juicy shrimp tacos from the iconic food truck Mariscos Jalisco, give diners a better sense of the vastness and depth of LA’s dining scene. Al Langer opened this vintage Jewish deli in 1947 and it’s typically rated as the best in Los Angeles. The best thing on the menu is the #19, a pastrami sandwich with Swiss, coleslaw and Russian dressing. The mashed potatoes and gravy are spot on, but the crispy chicken, similar to the burger, is not as moist as I would like. And, while I don’t see how this dish fits the Hawaii plantation era theme of the restaurant, it is a comfort-food dish that holds its own among the rest. Eating House 1849 is creatively different from the Roy’s chain of restaurants you may be familiar with that are located around the U.S., Guam and Japan. Its name is a nod to Peter Fernandez, a Portuguese man, who is said to have opened the first restaurant in Honolulu around 1849, called Eating House, popular among Oahu plantation workers. Now, Yamaguchi has taken this piece of Hawaii history and turned it into an idea for a restaurant with a menu that pays homage to the plantation days of Hawaii, influenced by Filipino and Portuguese flavors, along with Japanese, Chinese, Hawaiian and Korean cuisines. In 1926, Herman Greenblatt opened his eponymous deli which serves Jewish deli food, wine, and spirits.

Rough and unscrupulous adventurers would drive weaker and more peaceable parties from their claims, and take possession of the results of their labor. The immigration to California was not more remarkable for its numbers than the varied nationality of the immigrants. They came from all parts of the United States and the British provinces, and there was hardly a country of Europe but was represented among them.

Though gold mining continued throughout the 1850s, it had reached its peak by 1852, when some $81 million was pulled from the ground. After that year, the total take declined gradually, leveling off to around $45 million per year by 1857. Settlement in California continued, however, and by the end of the decade the state’s population was 380,000. The technique of hydraulic mining brought enormous profits but destroyed much of the region’s landscape. Thousands of would-be gold miners, known as 49ers for the year they arrived, traveled overland across the mountains or by sea, sailing to Panama or even around Cape Horn, the southernmost point of South America. Though Marshall and Sutter tried to keep news of the discovery under wraps, word got out, and by mid-March at least one newspaper was reporting that large quantities of gold were being turned up at Sutter’s Mill.

I have in this was, carried to our machine more than 3000 pounds per day, and then at night, as you may suppose, I would feel a little fatigued.
